The construction industry involves in building structures or modification of existing establishments. There are three major segments that divide the construction industry. First are the general contractors that build structures for residential, commercial, industrial and others. Next are the contractors building heavy and civil engineering establishments such as sewers, roads, bridges, tunnels, highways and other structures. Last are the special trade contractors. They specialize on construction related activities such as painting, electrical work, carpentry and plumbing.

Employees in the construction industry work in full time and work more than 40 hours a week. Contractors need to be flexible any time; they may work on evenings, holidays, and weekends or on emergencies. They also need to be physically fit for their work often requires physical strength. Also they are more prone to accidents and injuries than any other workers in other jobs.

The construction industry is one of the largest industries compose of millions of contractors. Mostly of the contractors are on wage and salary jobs while in large numbers are family workers that are self employed and unpaid. For those who want to run their own businesses, construction can offer more opportunities than other industries.

The construction industry has a numerous career opportunities to offer. People with high educational attainments and with different talents can find their opportunity for a job in the construction industry. Construction trade workers compose most of the workers in the construction. Structural, mechanical or finishing workers are the classifications of the construction trade workers. The construction industry also employs other workers specializing on different jobs other than the construction trade workers.

Persons with knowledge and training backgrounds can enter the industry of construction. Those with lower educational attainment may start as laborers or helpers. They advance to a higher level when their skills are already fitted for the job. They can learn through classroom instructions with on the job training and working with other more skilled workers. Others can learn through informal training and more experience in different areas of construction. The more the person receives an education the more skilled he becomes.

One can find outstanding job opportunities in the construction industry specially those who are skilled trade workers.  Also the jobs of wage and salary are expected to increase over the years. The employment in the construction industry greatly depends on the construction level and activities of remodeling the existing structures. It is expected that the growth of employment in different areas of the construction industry will increase although it may vary in different areas. This because it also assumed that there will be many constructions, remodeling or replacing of different structures.

The earnings of construction workers in the construction industry are higher compared to the average earnings of all other industries. The earnings of the construction vary depending on the type of work they have. Trade workers with higher skills such as plumbers and electricians are paid more than the trade workers with less skill such as the laborers and helpers.
