Counselors

When you are enthusiastic about being able to help people during a time in their life when they don't know what to do anymore, then you are fit to become a counselor. You can be that person whom they can turn to whenever they want someone to talk about their problems.

Counselors help individuals who are bothered with problems regarding their own self, their education, their family, their mental health and their career. The tasks that they perform vary on the setting that they specialize on.

  • Marriage counselors – when you are a counselor for married couples who have problems, you are usually going to deal with personal matters. They will probably talk to you about their usual spats which lead to huge arguments. Marriage counseling also involves the task of advising couples who are on the verge of separation. You can advise them to work things out before they finally decide to go through with the divorce.
  • High School counselors – when you counsel in high school institutions, you will meet a lot of kids who have various problems. They will probably talk to you about their problems at home, with their studies or with their personal relationship with other people.
  • Elementary counselors – kids within this stage are easier to get through unlike high school teens. When you are counseling younger children, you will probably talk to them about their academic performance. You might also harness their skills, talents and interests. You might advise them to use their intelligence to excel in class.
  • Vocational counselors – with this area of specialization, you are going to deal with individuals who have finished high school. You can monitor how the person has been doing after his or her high school education. You can check if the individual is doing well with the vocation that he or she is taking up.
  • Family counselors – when you deal with a whole family, you are probably going to deal about the misunderstandings between the siblings or the parents. You might also chance upon parents confiding that they have a hard time understanding their kids.

When you want to be a counselor, the State requires you to acquire a certification on school counseling. You should also obtain a graduate course and related work experience. In other states, a counselor for public schools is required to have a certification on teaching and counseling. You also need to have a teaching experience prior to your acceptance of a certificate. If you work outside schools, you should have finished a master's degree course in counseling. You should also have a two-year experience on supervised clinical counseling. You should also pass an examination which is recognized by the state. Lastly, you should complete education requirements each year.
