Library Technicians

There are a minimum of training requirements for individuals who are interested in becoming a library technician. Many libraries will offer interested individuals with on-the-job training once hired. The flexible and part-time schedules make this a great career for students and retirees. A library technician must become familiar with the particular type of cataloging system that the library uses. Computer skills are also an essential skill to have. A library technician is usually an individual who enjoys reading and working with the public.

A library technician is required to assist the library in organizing, preparing and acquiring new library materials. The library technician must assist the public with any complaints or questions they might have. A librarian usually supervises over the job activities performed by a library technician. A technician in a smaller library will have a number of job tasks to perform. These technicians usually have more job duties then a library technician employed by a larger library. A library technician must become familiar with the Internet, CD-ROM programs, automated databases and virtual libraries. As technology advances so does the computer software that libraries use. It seems that library technicians are constantly taking on greater job responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities were performed by librarians in the past.

There are a few library technicians who will be asked to handle tape and CD players, audiovisual equipment, projectors, DVD players and microfilm. Other technicians will be asked to design creative posters, displays and bulletin boards for special programs offered by the library.

A library technician may work ion a public library, a university library, a school library or a mobile library. Many public libraries offer the public a mobile library service called a bookmobile. A library is a quiet and clean work environment. Most library technicians have an associates degree or higher in the study of library science. The pay for a library technician is still considerable lower than other fields.

A library technician stocks shelves, orders new library materials, deals with questions from the public, checks out library materials and many other job responsibilities on a daily basis. A library technician can also register new library patrons. This is an excellent career field for someone who enjoys working with the public. At some moments in the day a library technician will work quietly by themselves and at other times of the day a library technician will be dealing with the public. This is a versatile career field that is perfect for someone with good communication skills and a love of literature.
