Mining and Geological Engineers, Including Mine Safety Engineers

Mining is a critical part of the development of the United States. Minerals such as silver and gold have made possible the economic growth and population shifts that the United States has experienced. The extraction of key minerals and natural resources such as coal provides the sustenance of many local communities that can be found across the country. The mining industry affects other industries including: agriculture, transportation, utilities, construction, communication and manufacturing. Minerals and other materials extracted form the earths layers are used for energy resources, satellite equipment, electronic equipment, ingredients in medicines and other minerals are used in common household goods.

The two main minerals extracted from the earth are metallic and nonmetallic minerals. A non metallic mineral is sand, clay and gravel. A metallic mineral is gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc and iron.

A mining and geological engineer is expected to figure out where to extract these minerals from the earth’s layers. An engineer must study geological formations that are on land and under the sea. The geological or mining engineer will use sophisticated pieces of equipment that transmit sound waves. The speed at which the sound waves travel around a natural geological formation determine if valuable minerals are stored within that specific formation. A geological or mining engineer is also responsible for the design, planning and construction of all mines that are in operation. The engineer must be very careful and follow safety guidelines in order to ensure the safety of the workers either working underground or blasting.

The salary for a geological or mining engineer is very high but this type of engineer must have a bachelors or masters degree in a specialized study of engineering. A mining engineer is constantly facing many struggles to find new mining locations. Plus with the mining safety codes and regulations being updated the mining engineer must design new mines that are safer in design. The geological and mining engineer is faced with a number of responsibilities and job duties.

A geological and mining engineer may work in rugged work environments as the engineer is seeking out and looking for new areas to mine. Sometimes the engineer may work in an office while the engineer is creating and designing plans for a new mining operation.

An individual interested in geological and mining engineering must be good at mathematics and several different studies of science. Mining is a critical part of the economy of the United States and other countries located throughout the world. Mining allows us to use natural resources for our energy and other needs.
