Over twenty percent of jobs in the motor vehicle industry are located in Michigan. Many of these jobs are focused around the Detroit area. It is estimated that other plants and jobs should increasingly be opened in other areas of the country. Employees in the motor vehicle and parts industry are offered high wages. These wages are especially high when compared to other similar industries. The one downside is that employment usually fluctuates with the ups and downs of the economy. Layoffs commonly occur when the economy is in a downward swing. It is predicted that employment will grow in the manufacturing of motor vehicle parts then in companies that manufacture vehicles.

The motor vehicle industry deals with the design and construction of passenger cars, sports utility vehicles, pickup trucks, heavy duty trucks, vans, buses, limousines, special purpose motor vehicles, garbage trucks and other vehicles that play an intricate role in society. The United States is considered to be the world’s largest marketplace for the selling of a motor vehicle. This is because the United States is a country of affluence and a large population. The United States Department of Transportation estimated that over two-hundred million vehicles are currently registered to drivers in the United States. This is an amazing number that always seems to be steadily growing.

The manufacturing of motor vehicle parts surpasses that of the construction of a motor vehicle. It is estimated that seven out of ten workers in the motor vehicle industry are employed by parts manufacturers. This number is expected to rapidly increase overt the next several years.

Workers in the motor vehicle industry are paid high wages. Usually the workers are expected to work overtime during peak times. These times are determined by the demand and production of motor vehicles and parts. Employees are expected to operate high-speed machines, lift and fit heavy objects, deal with heat, fumes, repetition and noise. The employees must function as a team. This means that the employees must be able to handle multiple-tasks; this decreases the feeling of assembly line work.

The different occupations in the industry are: Commercial Designers, Industrial Designers, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Technicians, Management, Computer System Analysts, Assemblers and Fabricators. All of these employees are vital to the successful design and construction of a motor vehicle.

The motor vehicle and parts industry is constantly growing and changing especially parts manufacturing. This is a career that requires limited formal training. There is plenty of room for advancement with several large motor vehicle corporations.
