The basic job of an occupational therapy assistant is to more or less maintain and promote the general health of their patients. All under the supervision of an occupational therapist, of course. This description includes learning the desired skills and functions needed for the productivity of health and the correction of pathology. They guide the individual through their personal goals, making sure to direct the correct use of time, energy, and interest. The assistant looks for any barriers that might hinder the individual’s performance and then directs their concern to help influence that performance in a more positive way. They do this by participating in skills taught and directed by the therapist. Individuals who have a hard time performing tasks in every day life due to age, physical illness, and social disability are the main concerns by a therapy assistant who strive to give them the best physical therapy possible.

There are certain degrees of education in occupational physical therapy that a therapy assistant needs to achieve before venturing out into the job market. They must have a foundation in the knowledge of liberal arts and science, which includes focusing on issues relating to diversity. They have to be educated as a generalist, and have wide range skills dealing with the delivery models and systems used for occupational therapy.

Besides their education, there are a few things therapy assistants need to take into consideration before pursuing that career. Being only an assistant, they have to be prepared to work under the supervision of a therapist and be able to cooperate properly on a professional level. The correct attitude of any kind of occupational therapist job is indeed needed by an assistant to uphold certain standards and values. There are always new medical practices coming into play, and a therapy assistant should be prepared to further their education and constantly learn.

Occupational therapist jobs range from nursing homes to schools and camps and to even private homes. There are a variety of settings to choose from when looking for that particular career.

The length for the education required can be either a two-year associate degree or a one-year certificate program. You can find these programs in any two-year and four-year college and university. After the education has been met, occupational therapy assistants then take a national certification examination.

According to AOTA studies, the average salary for an occupational therapy assistant is approximately $33,000. However, as with most jobs, it all depends on the general location of the job and the employer.
