Pharmacy Aides

Pharmacy aides’ duties include assisting pharmacists with administrative duties that come up when running a pharmacy. This includes things like stocking, handling money, answering phones and other clerical type duties. They handle things like processing and preparing insurance claim forms, inventory control, equipment maintenance and supplies. These jobs provide a valuable support to Pharmacy technicians and pharmacists.

The job outlook for pharmacy aides is good and expected to grow steadily. Job duties are also expected to grow and people who have previous experience are expected to do well.
The roles that pharmacy aides fill are many. Some of them include, stock clerk, insurance claims filer, cashier, record maintenance and receptionist. Advancement however is limited so that does need to be taken into consideration.

The majority of pharmacy aides will receive on the job training. A high school diploma is highly favorable. You will also need strong customer services, communications skills, inventory control skills and experience using computers. You will also need strong basic skills in spelling, reading, and math. Organization and responsibility along with being dedicated to details are also necessary. Cash handling skills are also something that might be necessary.

Wages sit somewhere slightly higher than the minimum national wage for the most part with some wages reaching the general wages of secretaries in a corporate setting. The range is somewhere between seven and thirteen dollars depending on experience and position.

Being a pharmacy aide is a demanding and important career. Even though there is little room for advancement and repetitive tasks form the basis of this position. There are a number of basic skills that having a strong background and foundation in is a key factor for this position. Pharmacy aides are in charge of administrative duties so having skills in filing, organization, handling things like multiple phone line system and computer skills are necessary. You will also need to be able to handle insurance claim forms so having a background or having some knowledge in insurance coding may be of benefit to you in this field. While advancement is not usually within the pharmacy aide, career field it is a career that is vital to the success of running a pharmacy. By handling routine paper work tasks, filing, and answering phones for the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians these positions are freed up to be able to spend more time with customers and doing jobs specific to their skill levels.
