Radiologic Technologists and Technicians

Radiologic Technologists are trained to help doctors receive a clearer image of the inside of the human body in order to determine an exact disease or problem. Often times a radiological technician will be in charge of preparing a patient’s chart and helping to inform them of the x-ray process. Different types of x-rays are more involved than others. Typically, a technician will position the camera at the right angle, drape a lead apron over the patient’s body parts that don’t need to be exposed to hazardous material, and then develop the film at the conclusion of the session. However, there are other x-rays that require a patient to drink a liquid in order to see the organs more clearly, and the radiologic technologist is responsible for mixing the solution that the patient must drink correctly.

Radiologic technicians are constantly exposed to radioactive material, but there are many safety precautions that are taken in order to minimize long term health risks like gloves, lead aprons, and masks. Technicians are also required to record the levels of radiation so that they can determine the amount that they have been exposed to over a lifetime. The workweek for a radiologic technician is average at 40 hours, but the hours are usually worked in shifts which may be at night or on weekends.

Most radiologic technologist will enter a two-year associate’s program in order to work in the field. The two-year program is considered to be the best choice for education and entry into the profession. However, there is a one-year certification course, but other people in the medical profession who are looking to change their careers use that course. In order to progress into a teaching or supervisory position, a bachelor’s degree will be required. However, the stability of the job is increasing because more clinics, hospitals, and doctor’s offices are employing radiologic technologists for their x-ray needs.

Radiologic technologists will usually make between $36,000 and $58,000 annually. However, most of the employers are hospitals and the retirement benefits for the job are excellent and supercede many other professions. More and more single mothers are getting into the profession due to the schedule and benefits. The medical profession’s benefits will always outweigh any of the disadvantages.
