Registered Nurses

Registered nurses can be found usually in hospitals. They are the nurses that usually check in patients, prepare their charts, and prepare them for their procedures. RNs will talk to the families of patients, administer medications orally and intravenously, and they will be responsible for most of their pre and post operation routines. Sometimes a RN will prepare a dietary and exercise plan for a patient to follow once they are discharged from a doctor’s care.

Most registered nurses are specialized in some area. For instance, an RN can be specialized in neurology, cardiology, urology, or addiction. The duties for a registered nurse will depend on their specialization. A urostomy, ostomy, or illiostomy nurse would be responsible for patient’s who have received an acute injury to their vital organs. They would be responsible for dressing, treating, and changing the wounds and their bandages. They would also be responsible for educating the patient on their new condition and all of the necessary steps involved in taking care of their wounds regularly when they are discharged from the hospital. A neurological nurse would have to possible change a tracheotomy tube and let the family know what is going on with the patient and how their condition has stabilized or progressed.

Nurses have to obtain at least an associate’s degree before they can enter a two-year nursing program. Many nurses find that it is more beneficial to receive a bachelor’s degree before they apply to nursing school. Although nurses are in high demand, the nursing programs can prove to be challenging to get into. Therefore, a bachelor’s degree may improve a person’s chances of gaining admission to a program. Undergraduate programs with a concentration of biology, chemistry, or pre med usually gain admittance easier than other majors.

Nurses are in a high stress profession with irregular hours, however, most registered nurses work in shifts which means that you could work three days on and have four days off, or vice versa. Mothers and women who are looking to start a family usually favor the nursing profession. However, men have started rapidly joining the occupation in the last ten years.  Registered nurses are in great demand in some states, particularly in cities that are rapidly expanding. The job is known for its stability and security that has been prominent for years.
