Surgical Technologists

Surgical technologists start by preparing the operating room and selecting the correct sterilized tools. These duties might include assembling, adjusting, and checking any of the non-sterile equipment to make sure they are all in proper working order, and operating the lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment.

When it comes to patients, surgical technologists try to provide physical and emotional support before surgery as a way to prepare them. While doing this they also check the charts and vital signs of the patient. After they position the patient on the operating table, a surgical technologist will then connect the individual to the monitoring devices and surgical equipment, and prepare the incision site. Their responsibilities rest solely on maintaining the sterile surgical instruments and keeping a vigilant eye on the rest of the members of the surgical team.

During surgery it’s the surgical technicians’ job to insure the surgery runs smoothly and properly by passing the instruments to the surgeons and making sure the sterile items are provided. They also have the responsibility of making sure the sponges, needles, and instruments are all accounted for before, during, and after surgery.

Surgical technologists are more or less there to be readily available for the surgeon whenever help is needed. They might be asked to hold instruments, sponge and suction certain parts of the operative site, and cut materials. After they are done applying the proper sterile dressings and assisting in the application of non-sterile dressings, the surgical technologists then prepare the operating room for the next patient.

Surgical technologists must have a high school diploma and then take any additional programs needed. These programs usually last between twelve to fourteen months, depending on the program itself. The studies include any areas having to deal with medical terminology, professional ethics, and legal aspects of surgical patient care.

Depending on the experience and education of the individual, the amount of responsibilities given for that position, and the working hours, their salary can vary drastically. The average salary, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, is $34,010.
