Schooling at Home

Many Americans are choosing Home Schooling as an educational option. It is estimated that 1.1 million students are home schooled every year, and most of them go onto being successful university students.

What is home schooling?

Children are educated at home, by their parents and sometimes a tutor.  They design the syllabus or follow the pattern set by home schooling companies.  The internet and other virtual classrooms are incorporated into home schools.  The courseware could be based on the needs of the child.

Why are children home schooled?

Parents prefer the flexible approach to teaching, in which they are able to include a variety of subjects that may not be taught in regular schools. The teaching is more focused and holistic than regular schools.  The parent can also adopt specific educational practices for children with learning disabilities or illnesses. 

These are some of the benefits of home schooling:

• Safety and less exposure to violence–

Children are better protected at home from bullies, drugs and other such problems. Their learning curve increases in a more protected atmosphere

• Better Socialization –

As children are away from negative influences, they become more disciplined adults. The family becomes a better medium in teaching values and norms of behavior. This helps in children who are better adjusted to society.

• Better family bonds-

Family’s are able to understand each other and the emotional and intellectual needs are catered to more systematically because of the unique bond.

• Less pressure of underage sex –

Children in regular schools are under pressure to have sex much earlier.  Home schooling reduces the pressure, as there is much greater parental guidance and moral support.
