1. Communication

Talk with your child and listen to the child.  You will understand what he or she likes or dislikes, what are the fears, and whether the child gets along with teachers and peers. As the child grows, you could even discuss the school progress report.

2. Reading

Research has proven that children who read fare better in school.  Buy your child books, and take him or her to the library.  Read to your child, if you find that difficult; enroll your child in a reading program. This will encourage your child to read, pick up better vocabulary and strengthen the academic foundation.  If your child has reading problems, you may need to see a specialist.  The causes could be as varied as weak eyesight to learning disabilities.

3. Creative activities

These can be as diverse as drawing, cutting and pasting, and cooking simple dishes. As they grow older, you could teach them sewing or carpentry. This will improve their concentration and motor skills.

4. Homework

Some parents even a fixed time and space devoted to homework.   Remember to shut off the television and reduce distraction like the telephone during homework time. A child who does homework regularly, does better in school.
