Mathematics for SAT

The SAT mathematics section covers questions on elementary topics that you studied during your high school days. The total time allotted for SAT mathematics section is 70 mins in which you need to solve two sections of 25 minutes each and one section of 20 minutes. The score range for this section is 200-800.

Topics covered under the SAT mathematics section are numbers & operations, algebra & functions, geometry, statistics, data analysis, and probability. The section has multiple choice questions and problems that have “student-produced responses”. It is important to note the directions before you start SAT mathematics section. One major advantage of SAT mathematics section is that you are provided with the necessary formulae at the beginning of the section. It is not necessary for you to memorize the formulae. You only need to decide the correct formula to be used for a given problem and answer the question. Go through the problem statement thoroughly and make sure you have interpreted it correctly. It will help you in deciding what is being asked and what you need to do or which formula to use. Another good thing about SAT is that you can use calculators to solve problems in SAT mathematics section. However, make sure that you don’t use the calculator every time. There are some problems that can be solved orally or just by looking at the answer choices. You will need to be careful when solving “student-produced response” questions. There are no answer choices in this section and you are required to mark your answers on a grid sheet. Since the grid sheets are machine scored there is a typical way of filling in your answer choices. You can use the test book for scratch work and calculator to solve the problems correctly and arrive at appropriate answers.
