Vocabulary in SAT

SAT has sections on critical reading and writing, thus making vocabulary an important part of the test. However, studying SAT vocabulary does not mean learning every word in the dictionary. SAT surely tests your proficiency in English language and also your critical reasoning ability.

SAT vocabulary does not include too difficult words or words that are too easy. Experts have analyzed that SAT vocabulary covers about 10000 words. You must be familiar with almost 50% of these words and should regularly use them. The only task left for you is to practice new words and develop a habit of using them frequently. Continuous lookup and review will help you memorize the words and hence develop your SAT vocabulary. SAT has two sections that will need you to have a strong vocabulary. The critical reading section (earlier called verbal section) and the writing section each are again divided into subsections. The critical reading section has 3 individual sections on English language. There are questions on sentence completion and reading passages. The writing section has multiple choice questions and an essay writing section. SAT vocabulary will be very useful in attempting questions on sentence correction, spotting the errors and sentence completion. A good vocabulary will enable you write better with effective words and present your ideas in a well organizes manner. All of these sections would require a strong understanding of words and their meanings.

Having better vocabulary not only will help you in SAT but also in your future life during college and while on job. A poor vocabulary may not only affect your SAT score but also limit the power of expressing your thoughts in life ahead. Vocabulary building books, software, CD-ROMs and online tools are available in plenty. You can use there to improve your SAT vocabulary as well as your confidence.
