Medical JobsThere are a handful of careers that never go out of demand. Leading the pack is medicine. As disease is inevitable, doctors need to rise up to the challenges of growing population, newer pathogens, changing disease profiles and better drugs. Moreover, doctors in the modern society don the mantle of health management professionals. Newer diagnostic techniques develop as a result of contributions in academic research by medical professionals. Therefore, it is clear that the career horizon for doctors is indeed quite wide.
Doctors find work in hospitals, health maintenance organizations or even in large companies where they would provide specialist advice as consultants. Another important avenue is that of the general practitioner or family medicine practitioner. This would be in a community-based setting where one would be responsible for the health of entire families. There had been a steep fall in numbers pursuing this option. But, the changing perception about the role of a doctor as being responsible for holistic health management has revived interest in general practice. Specialists of course, continue to hone their skills and become super-specialists. Doctors could also find a profitable career in pure and applied research. This means they would work in enhancing fundamental knowledge about diseases and a myriad of things associated with them. They could work in government or private research institutions. They could also work in pharmacological organizations or drug companies to develop new combinations for emerging diseases like cancer, AIDS and diabetes.
Yet another option is academia. This could cover, besides teaching, curriculum development and medical education administration.
Apart from traditional “clinical” skills, doctors need to acquire certain “new-age” attitudes to succeed in the modern scenario. This includes ability to work in a team, good communication, quick learning and adaptability to new technology.
A career in medicine is indeed a cherished one. Besides the fulfillment of helping patients recover from illness, the lasting contributions one could make in the larger social context make it an exciting career prospect. Although it is a hard toil to become a doctor, the satisfied smile on a patient’s face makes it all worthwhile. The financial rewards are considerable and grow in proportion to your skills and experience. |
